The Wild Girl:

In 1890 there was a terrible tragedy- a gentleman and his wife were found murdered in their beds, torn at, as if by a wild animal. What follows is mostly hearsay.

Several months before, the gentleman had gone on a hunting trip with a few friends. Pickings were slim, the deer seemed to all be in hiding, as if frightened of something. Then they saw her. A young girl, disheveled, wearing the skin of a deer. She snarled at them. One of the men shot at her. Luckily he did not kill her, only wounding her in the leg. As she wailed in pain, foaming at the mouth, the gentleman took pity on her. He bound her wound, and took her home with him, to the tender care of his wife.

Soon the wild girl began to trust the man and woman who treated her like she was their daughter. Although she could not speak, and was, in manner, more wolf than human, she seemed to appreciate their kindness. Although she could not speak, she was able to read, and spent many long hours perusing the books in their library. The couple came to think that she had not really been raised by wolves, but escaped some awful life to live a primitive life in the woods, safe from any that might harm her.

They were as fond as any parents could be of their wayward child. They never flinched when she dragged her steak onto the floor to gnaw at like a dog. The only bad times were when she became angry or frightened, and would bare her teeth and howl like a wolf.

No one knows what happened that night, but the next day, the wild girl was nowhere to be found. As no one had ever really seen her except the hunters in the wood that day, and the sightings many claimed to have had afterwards, we cannot even know if this story is true.

All we know is that out there, somewhere, the wild girl may still be roaming the forests, howling at the moon, wailing for the loss of the only people who ever loved her.
